Annotated Summary Draft #1 (Revised 8-Dec-2020)
Aizad, M. K., & Othuman, M. A. (2013). Significance of Thermal Comfort in Buildings and Its Relation to the Building Occupants. European Journal of Technology and Design, 2013, 1(1), 54-63. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/284456661_Significance_of_Thermal_Comfort_in_Buildings_and_Its_Relation_to_the_Building_Occupants
This research article studies the effects of poor thermal
conditions on occupants and highlights the factors that influence thermal
comfort for occupants.
First
of all, the article mentions two effects of poor thermal conditions on
occupants, which are decreased productivity and poor performance. It is
reported that by improving the indoor air quality, there could be a rise in
productivity by 5% to 10%. Providing a faster-moving air and the use of
feasible shades and materials could improve the performance of building
occupants.
Secondly,
the article also highlights several factors that influence thermal comfort,
such as relative humidity, air temperature, mean radiant temperature, and air
velocity. Relative humidity refers to the amount of moisture in the air
relative to the maximum moisture it can carry, and air temperature refers to
the temperature of the air surrounding the human body. Mean radiant temperature
is defined as heat transferred from a hotter to a cooler mass. Air velocity is
important for thermal comfort as it can prevent occupants from feeling weary
and uncomfortable.
Clothing
and activity also influence the thermal comfort of occupants. Changes in
clothing can control the exchange of heat between the human body and the
surroundings. Clothing can act as a barrier against the exchange and transfer
of heat.
Other
factors that influence thermal comfort are acclimatization, diet, body build,
and health conditions of occupants.
Lastly,
the article suggested that thermal comfort must be met for human occupancy.
Relative humidity of the air must be kept within 30% to 70% for thermal
comfort. 80% of the occupants will find thermal comfort acceptable if the
environmental factors fall within the bounds of comfort.
This
article provided a good insight on what conditions should be closely controlled
and monitored to ensure that majority of occupants experience good thermal
comfort.

Dear Sebastian,
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sebastian, for doing a summary in regards to your project research.
I have read through your annotated summary and find it interesting how thermal comfort can affect us during class and lecture.
Here are some pointers I found and I hope it is helpful for you. In your article, paragraph two-line four instead of "faster moving" you might want to add in a '-' in between them, and in the third paragraph line two instead of "comfort" you might want to replace it to "comforts", and also add "the" to human and heat in line five and six as well as health in line two of your last paragraph.
Overall, it was a good read, and thank you once again for your effort in doing this annotated summary.
Cheers,
Raymond
Dear Raymond,
DeleteThank you for your comments and feedback. I have amended them accordingly.
Cheers,
Sebastian
Dear Sebastian,
ReplyDeleteI have read through your annotated summary and I am very impressed with the work done. Having to summarize a whole research article of almost 3000 words to 300 words is not an easy task. Through this article, I am able to fully understand thermal comfort and the influence it brings to the occupants. As this is used for your project, I would kindly suggest that you can mention how this article helps with the process of your research for the project. By doing so, it looks more like an annotated summary than compared to a normal summary.
Overall, I could not spot any grammar errors and I feel like you have done a pretty good job in summarizing as every paragraphs are not only complete but linked.
Best regards,
Junying
Dear Junying,
DeleteThank you for your feedback.
I have briefly amended on my content to better link to the project.
Cheers,
Sebastian
Dear Sebastian,
ReplyDeleteAfter reading your summary on thermal comfort in buildings, I would like to say I have a better understanding on how the different factors affect the occupant’s comfort. Every point mentioned in each paragraph was very detailed and clearly elaborated. There is a lot of effort you have placed in summarizing this article.
Overall, well done.
Best regards,
Joshua
Dear Joshua,
DeleteThank you for taking the time to read through my summary. I am glad that you now have a better understanding on occupant's thermal comfort after reading.
Cheers,
Sebastian
Thank you for revising this, Sebastian. Great detail!
